
By profession, an Economist and a Statistician, Ato Alemayehu Teferi, is a prominent Deaf leader in Ethiopia. He became Deaf at the age of 15. He attended his first degree at Asmara University in Economics and earned his MA in Economics and Econometrics from Botswana University. He is currently a Directorate Director of Household Surveys and Price Statistics Department at Central Statistical Agency. As part of a community service, few of his leadership role include:
- Former chairman of Ethiopian National Association of the Deaf (ENAD)
- Former treasurer of Ethiopian Federation of Persons with Disabilities (EFPD)
- Former president of Ethiopian Federation of Person with Disabilities (EFPD)
- Former president of Federation of Ethiopian National Associations of Person with Disabilities (FENAPD)
- Former board member at Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD)
- Founding president and senior advisor of Deaf Development and Information Association (DDIA)
- Founding President of Ethiopian Deaf Sports Federation (EDSF)
While being the former President of ENAD, apart from those leadership roles, he played a significant role to the launching of Ethiopia’s first BA program in Ethiopian Sign Language and Deaf Culture at Addis Ababa University. He taught Introductory Statistics and Ethiopian Sign Language for the Undergraduate students of the program.
